Just a week ago, our community—and the nation—was devastated by the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk. My heart goes out to his loved ones, especially his wife and children.

No one should ever be threatened or harmed for exercising their First Amendment right to free speech. Universities, in particular, should be places where ideas can be shared openly and respectfully, without fear. That freedom is how we grow, challenge assumptions, and develop true critical thinking. Violence, on the other hand, silences conversation—it doesn’t change minds or hearts.

As someone who has taught at UVU for more than 10 years, it’s heartbreaking to know that this campus, which embraces the vision of “Come as you are”—welcoming people of all backgrounds and perspectives—was the site of such senseless violence.

Some of my students were present at the event, and I know they, along with everyone who witnessed it, will carry the weight of that moment for the rest of their lives. This assassination will leave a lasting mark on our nation as well.

I hope that we can come together, bridge our divides, and heal as neighbors, families, and people who love our city and our country. I believe in the goodness and resilience of our community, and I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure Provo is a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and heard.
